The problem
Airport buildings that had never been cleaned
The two car hire buildings at Sunshine Coast Airport in Marcoola house every car hire operator on site, and for several years, they had never been properly cleaned. Mould had taken hold across the surfaces, cobwebs had built up in the edges and corners, and a general layer of grime had settled into the slotted Hardiboard cladding that makes up the buildings’ exterior.
Hardiboard is a durable cladding choice for commercial buildings, but its slotted profile creates a lot of surface area for dirt to get into. What we did
Working in two phases around a live operation
The cleaning challenge here wasn’t just the buildings; it was the schedule. The car hire desks operate from approximately 7 am through to 9 pm. That meant we had to wash the exterior of both buildings completely outside those hours, which in practice meant starting before dawn and cleaning in the dark.
Our team arrived in the early morning hours. We worked through both buildings by work light, washing the Hardiboard cladding, carefully clearing the built-up mould and grime from every groove and slot in the profile, and cleaning the outdoor deck areas attached to each building. The slotted cladding required methodical attention: running a standard building wash across the face is not enough when dirt is lodged in every edge. Our team cleaned through the profile, not just across it.
We cleaned the exterior windows during the building wash. The interior glass was a separate operation; a team returned during business hours to clean the inside of the windows while car hire customers were still at the desks, working quietly and carefully to complete the job without disrupting anyone using the facility.
The result
Two buildings cleaned, zero disruption to operations
The team returned later that day to inspect the completed exterior work in daylight. Both buildings were clean, the Hardiboard cladding clear of mould and grime, the grooves and slots cleaned through, the decks washed, and the glass streak-free inside and out.
